How long have you worked in Edwards & Co?
I joined Edwards & Company in May 2014 after heading up a busy family department in North Down since 2007.
Do you specialise in any particular area?
Since qualifying as a solicitor I have specialised exclusively in matrimonial and family law. I advise clients on all aspects of separation to include divorce, financial negotiations and settlement, asset preservation and ancillary relief.
In 2012 I was appointed an accredited member of the Children (NI) Order Panel and advise clients on any issues arising in relation to child residence/contact matters, family relocation, issues with Social Services, Secure Accommodation Order applications, Care Order proceedings and adoption.
What do you like about what you do?
At any first consultation a new client will always have a list of questions or concerns that may have caused countless sleepless nights before they have plucked up the courage to make an appointment with me. I like the fact I can alleviate the majority of those concerns from day one and help my clients enter in to and move through the process of separation feeling more informed and supported right up until the conclusion of their case.
What’s the best case you’ve ever worked on?
In or around 2010 I was instructed on behalf of a husband to issue divorce proceedings against his wife. Unfortunately my client was terminally ill with cancer with only a short time to live. My client’s assets were all tied up in the divorce process. He required a swift conclusion to these proceedings to enable him to leave a gift to his family in his will. As well as being time sensitive, my client’s case was compounded by the fact he was confined to his bed and unable to attend court. Despite this, I was able to present my client’s case before the Court in November 2010 whereupon my client was awarded his fair share of the assets of the marriage. In December 2010 my client sadly died but did so with the ability to leave his share of the assets to his family.
