How long have your worked for Edwards and Company?
I commenced work at Edwards and Co in May 2003 as their first Practice Manager This was a new venture for the firm and my first experience of the legal profession from the inside.
What does your job involve?
I manage the practice on a daily basis, liaising with the Partners and the finance manager and dealing with HR, marketing and business development. I joined the firm on the promise of the then Senior Partner, Mr Richard Murphy BEM, that I would not be involved face to face with clients. However, having served for ten years as the vice chair of the Pensions committee of the Police Negotiating Board it was inevitable that, as problems arose in the Pensions sector, I would be the first port of call. I am delighted that one of our solicitors Raymond Johnston has taken up this role leaving me free in the main to carry out the management role.
What do you like about what you do?
I enjoy every aspect of my work, I am extremely fortunate that in forty years of working I have never been unhappy in any role but never more so than in Edwards and Co. The absence of a blame culture is perhaps most refreshing compared to my previous occupations.
What is the best aspect of your work?
In the Practice Management side gaining ISO and Lexcel charter marks for the firm which put in place an efficient management structure and established a firm business ethic.
In the area of pensions being able to assist Widows and injured officers to obtain justice is particularly satisfying.
Establishing the Give As You Earn system of supporting Charities and being able to play a part in fundraising for our Charity of the Year, especially in 2014 when we raised £20,000 for the NI Hospice.
