The facility to get divorced online is not available in Northern Ireland. It is still necessary to physically lodge divorce papers with the Court office and have them served on your ex-spouse.
However, since lockdown the Court has developed online hearings for some divorce hearings, so depending on your circumstances you may not actually have to attend the Court building for your divorce hearing. If you wish to issue proceedings without a solicitor, a copy of the forms you need to lodge are available on the court service website here. The court service also provides a helpful guide for anyone wanting to issue divorce proceedings without using a solicitor. What is regularly over looked when getting divorced without engaging solicitors is the fact that the financial matters between two spouses will remain unresolved unless a final financial order is granted by the court.
Marriage is a financial contract that does not simply end on divorce. If you get divorced without getting a final order severing all financial ties to your spouse, your ex-spouse will continue to have a claim on your financial assets long after your divorce is finalised. This is true even if you should move on to buy new assets such as a new home, or even get married again. If you would like more information on how to separate your assets and all financial ties on separation, we offer a fixed fee consultation providing an overview of how the court would divide the relevant assets.
