You may think that your local community group or organisation is not a charity but perhaps think again!
It is a legal requirement for all charity trustees to ensure that they come forward to register their charity with the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland. The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland has issued a public call to all charities to ensure that they meet their legal obligations.
The obligation to register falls on the charity trustees of each organisation so it is really important to understand whether your local history society or small community group constitutes a charity. Similarly, trusts may in fact be charitable trusts. These are not exempt from registration and need to make themselves known to the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland.
There is further information on the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland’s website here.
