Smith and Ouzman Limited, a private limited company based in Eastbourne has become the first company to be convicted, after trial, for offences involving bribery of foreign public officials.

The company which specialises in security documents such as ballot papers and exam certificates was convicted of three counts of corruptly agreeing to make payments in order to influence the award of contracts.

What is interesting is that not only was the company itself convicted but in addition the Chairman and a Director were also convicted.

This is a stark reminder that companies can also be held criminally liable for the actions of it’s staff.

It also highlights the fact that it is not only the big multinationals that attract the attention of the authorities.

Sentencing is to take place on 12th February 2015.
